Black Girl Church is a documentary that explores the relationship of Black women to the beauty supply store and why being there can sometimes feel like being in a sanctuary. I was commissioned by their director to create a documentary cover that signified the power of the black hair experience. See my work and read more about the documentary in this Teen Vogue article covering the movement.
What ended up coming out of me creatively was inspired by the feminist art movement in the 70's. It was a powerful time, much like now, for women's rights and artwork so I wanted to pull creatively from that inspiration. The photos my client shared also inspired me tremendously. As I looked at them, I felt powerful, strong and unstoppable. The female characters portrayed then, and those we admire now, are fearless and bold. I felt drawn to create a woman who showcased the same. As a black woman, I sometimes feel I have to be strong to love my hair, nurture and sometimes defend it from others. To be a black woman is to be strong, and to love your skin, hair and everything else that comes with being black is to be even stronger.
