Creating Emotional and Artistic Freedom On Your Own Terms with Jessica Bramlett

I don’t believe you have to be stressed, tired and burned out in order to be successful. I believe that my basic needs as a functioning human (you know like eating, sleeping and seeing other humans) are important and that it’s okay to set boundaries in your working life that allow you to be successful and happy at the same time. Crazy idea, I know. Jessica of Jessica Design Co. believes the same and is a master at working smarter, not harder. She’s introduced me to so many tools in my business that have helped me to work better, so that I can create the life I want to live. Today we’re chatting about:

In our working lives, especially when you're excited about what you're doing, it can be very easy to cross the line and put too much on your plate out of excitement for opportunities. When you love what you're doing you don't always notice the time, but what happens when the pressure comes from bills, a boss or society? How do you draw the line for yourself and others to make a living but also get the job done efficiently and well? It is possible to do both, but you have to first define what your limits are. Decide the type of work environment you enjoy and one that helps you to thrive. Is it fast paced? Is it slow? Do you like being managed or do you work better alone? From there, stick to your guns. Only accept projects and opportunities that align with you and your boundaries. If you're unsure what you want, try a small project in a new environment with different responsibilities and see how you like it.

The ultimate goal is to create a life YOU love and that gets you excited everyday. You have the power to create a life that you enjoy and doesn't leave you feeling exhausted and like you don't want to do anything but sleep. I want you to do an exercise with me. Take a look at the 5 questions below and answer them in a journal or Google doc:

  • What do I enjoy about my current work life.

  • What do I dislike about my current work life.

  • If I could set up my day any way I choose, what would my dream workday look like?

  • What does my dream life look like?

  • Which passions do I have that I wish I could do everyday for a living?

Take a look at the answers and think about what in your life now matches the reality you want to create. What's one thing you can do today to move towards your goals? Is it setting aside one hour to work on your dream life on the weekend? Maybe it's taking a Saturday morning to answer these questions. Think about what you really want and then start working towards it.
